Do's and Don'ts of Social Media

When you’re just jumping into the world of social media, it can be tricky to know just what to do or where to begin.  Whether you’re using Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, LinkdIn or any other site, using social media to build your business is a hot trend.  Here are a few tips and tricks when using social media for business purposes.

DO’S

Do- Stay consistent and use the same avatar (picture) for every social site.  This helps with building your brand, so make sure it is either a company logo or a picture that reflects your business.

Do- Use social media to bring exposure to your website or company.  If you want to update random thoughts and post on old high school friends walls, make sure you make a personal account as well.  Keep the two separate.

Do- Post original content.  Think about what you’d want to know if the shoe was on the other foot.  Submit info that would be useful to your followers .

Do-Blog.  Blogging is a good way to drive people to your site so start a blog and update it regularly.

Do- Keep your social profiles live and updated.  Old information doesn’t do anyone any good.

Do- Know the faux pas of the social media site, each one has a different culture of sorts, so take a step back and see how those who are successful are doing it.

Do- Be subtle with your marketing.  Most people don’t have the patience to deal with overly gimmicky marketing tactics.  Don’t over do it.

 DON’TS

Don’t- Don’t spam on social media, because you will lose followers or friends faster than you can bat an eye, and lose your credibility.

Don’t- Over do it.  It may seem like you’re catching up with competitors by posting a tweet every 30 minutes at first, but you will lose followers because of this.  People want useful information, not to be bombarded with useless info.  You’re much more likely to lose a fan or follower by over posting than you are by posting less.

Don’t- Be negative.  Don’t use your social media site to down your competitors.  Negative comments will only reflect poorly on your organization.

Don’t- Post the same stuff over and over.  No one likes broken records, and you will lose fans and followers quickly.
